It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since our last major trip. In the spring of 2023, along with a couple of friends, we embarked on a journey that took us across the ocean, with a couple of planes and a train, and finally to the breathtaking landscapes which made the perfect Scotland adventure. (FYI a 6-hour layover in Canada is not something we would recommend. It is very boring.)

First Impressions and Edinburgh Excitement
After spending a week in Scotland, we’re we were already yearning to go back as we were flying home. A few days just wasn’t enough to truly appreciate all the stunning beauty this country offers.
Anyone who knows Nicole knows she is a planner. She enjoys a well-structured schedule, but will always leave room for flexibility and impromptu adventures. Planning helps us make the most of our time and ensures we don’t miss out on anything that is a MUST see.
The Scotland Adventure Begins
We could have taken a direct flight to Scotland, but where’s the adventure in that? Therefore, our journey in London, navigating from the airport to the train station we choose to take the Underground transit. Naturally, our travel luck kicked in, and our train broke down. Picture the 4 lost American’s, stranded in the middle of London with all our luggage, having zero clue where we even were. Eventually we called an Uber to save the day.
Despite the hiccup, we made it to the train station and enjoyed a delightful 4-hour ride to Edinburgh. If you’re planning a similar trip, splurge on first-class; the extra space and complimentary drinks are well worth it!
Hello, Edinburgh!
As soon as we stepped off the train in Edinburgh, the city’s charm captivated us. There’s something magical about a place steeped in history, especially one with medieval vibes. Hungry and tired, we made our way to the hotel, dragging our suitcases and looking every bit the classic tourists.
Our first dinner? Taco Bell. Yes, quick and easy won the day. Spoiler: Scottish Taco Bell is not quite the same as back home, but it did the trick. After traveling for an entire day, we all headed to bed early.
Exploring Edinburgh
Our week began with a day in Edinburgh. After breakfast, we strolled through the city, visiting major sights like Edinburgh Castle, Ross Fountain, Greyfriar Bobby’s Statue and Grave (we rubbed his nose for good luck), St. Giles’ Cathedral, and Victoria Street.
The Royal Mile was alive with energy. We encountered a talented street artist (who unfortunately sold out before Nicole could buy anything), a bagpiper in traditional Scottish attire, and even an owl! If we hadn’t had plans, Nicole would have loved to hold that owl.
Our evening ended with a Ghost Walk, filled with eerie tales and fascinating history. We even ventured underground, exploring areas perfect for a thriller movie setting. Thankfully we survived and lived to tell the tale.

Scotland Road Trip Adventure Through the Highlands
The next morning, after a hearty traditional English breakfast at The Caley Picture House, we embarked on our road trip. Renting (or “hiring,” as they say) a car, we set out to explore the Highlands and capture some amazing traveling photos of Scotland.
Driving on the opposite side of the road was quite the adventure. Nicole only managed to hit one traffic cone, so we consider that a win! Our trusty car, affectionately named Conan the Cone Killer, carried us through some of the most breathtaking scenery we’ve ever seen.

Scotland Adventure of the Highlands
Over four days, we traveled from Edinburgh to Inverness, the Isle of Skye, and finally Pitlochry. We sampled scotch, hunted for the Loch Ness monster, and explored historic castles. Some memorable moments include:
- Stayed in a bed and breakfast older than the United States
- Spotting highland cows (sadly only from a distance)
- Cruising the largest loch in Scotland in search of Nessie
- Visiting a delightfully cheesy Loch Ness Monster Museum
- Trying bonbons for the first time and loving them
- Nicole slipping in mud and having to change her pants on the roadside
- Sheep casually wandering the roads as if they own them
- Waterfalls everywhere thanks to the rain
- Seals lounging on rocks during a stormy boat ride (FYI: it was freezing)
- Sunrise hiking Old Man of Storr in cold, rainy weather for amazing views
- Learning about scotch at Talisker and Dalwhinnie (fun fact, the Scottish give the DD gets “to go” containers for their scotch)
- Enjoying delicious seafood at The Oyster Shed
- Visiting the castle from the movie Highlander aka Eilean Donan Castle
- Savoring amazing pastries and watching cat tricks at Manuela’s Wee Bakery (they were so good, we stopped twice in one day)
- Buying authentic Scottish jewelry at the Heathergem factory and shop
These four days were packed with adventure and stunning views, perfect for anyone looking to capture travel photos of Scotland. We embraced every moment, planned and unplanned, and found joy in the unexpected.

Scotland Stole Our Hearts
We fell in love with Scotland. While Edinburgh was fantastic, the Highlands and quaint small towns truly captured our hearts. We barely scratched the surface during our adventure of this beautiful Scotland country and can’t wait to return. We were already planning our next trip on the train back to London!
Have we convinced you to venture to Scotland and start your own journey of capturing travel photos of Scotland?
Happy Travels, Nicole + Ryan
